Subspecies/ ondersoorten The eastern Montpellier snake was first described by Hermann in 1804, and named Coluber monspessulanus. It has been named Malpolon monspessulanus insignitus since 1928 (Mertens & Möller), but in 2006 it returned to the status of species with Malpolon insignitus. (Carranza et al. 2006).

A subspies fuscus (now M. i. fuscus) is described for Greece including
both the Aegean islands and the mainland.
